The engine will run. Your unleaded engine is not designed to run on leaded gasoline. Your car will fail emissions testing. Leaded gas will damage sensors and the catalytic converters of your unleaded car.

According to the Department of the Environment and Energy, leaded petrol was a major contributor to the high levels of pollution in major cities. Lead also affects the health of the general population, as it’s been linked to birth complications, intellectual impairment of children and lead poisoning.

Leaded petrol has caused more exposure to lead than any other source worldwide. By contaminating air, dust, soil, drinking- water and food crops, it has caused harmfully high human blood lead levels around the world, especially in children (1). By the 1970s, almost all petrol produced around the world contained lead.

Cars built for lead-based fuels don’t work well with modern unleaded variants. Not only that, but ignition firing can be affected and may need to be reset and adjusted to work with different types of modern fuel.

Leaded ‘four-star’ petrol was withdrawn from sale in 2000 and the product that replaced it – Lead Replacement Petrol (LRP) – went the same way in 2003 as sales were so low. If you’ve got a pre-1992 car it’s important to find out if it can run on normal (95 octane) unleaded petrol.

Depending on the engine’s design, it may have needed leaded fuel for one or both purposes. However, some pre-1986 vehicles will operate satisfactorily on Unleaded (ULP) or Premium Unleaded (PULP). To find out if your car is one of these consult the list or the vehicle’s manufacturer.

The ethanol-blended E10 (a mixture of up to 10 per cent ethanol in petrol) is a substitute for 91 in most cars 2005ish or newer. If you open the fuel flap of your car and it says ‘unleaded petrol only’ it means 91 octane fuel is OK. If the fuel flap says ‘premium unleaded only’ it means you need to use at least 95.

But remember – if your engine needs an unleaded fuel, you don’t want to mix leaded with unleaded. Doing so would make a leaded fuel which could still damage oxygen sensors and catalytic converters. The percentage of the 100 octane fuel in the mix is 2/5 = 0.40 ( 40%).

Lead is used in racing fuels because it’s a very effective octane booster. As a matter of fact, leaded fuels are often credited for allowing higher compression, higher efficiency engines in World War II era aircraft. The meaning of the name The term unleaded is short for unleaded petrol and it refers to the fact that the fuel comes without lead compounds. All modern day petrol cars in the western world run on unleaded fuel.

They reduce the emission of harmful gases from automobiles by converting hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, nitric oxide to nitrogen and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Use of unleaded petrol is however recommended as the lead in petrol causes inactivation of the catalyst.
