Kasturba Gandhi was among the first of the protesters or Satyagrahis, as Mahatma Gandhi used to call the non-violent resisters, to stage dharna at Transvaal in South Africa after the colonial government there declared all non- Christian marriages invalid.

In May 1883, the 13-year-old Mohandas was married to 14-year-old Kasturbai Makhanji Kapadia (her first name was usually shortened to “Kasturba”, and affectionately to “Ba”) in an arranged marriage, according to the custom of the region at that time.

78 years (1869–1948)

In February 1943, Gandhi staged a 21-day hunger strike that nearly killed him, but remained imprisoned. His wife developed bronchitis and suffered several heart attacks behind bars; she would ultimately die there just a month before Gandhi was released in May 1944.

Kasturba Kapadia

Kasturba Gandhi, in full Kasturba Mohandas Gandhi, née Kasturba Kapadia, Kasturba also spelled Kasturbai, (born April 11, 1869, Porbandar, India—died February 22, 1944, Pune), Indian political activist who was a leader in the struggle for civil rights and for independence from British rule in India.

Interestingly, Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule, Gandhi’s most important book on his political philosophy, was entirely executed in a ship called SS Kildonan Castle. It was, in fact, written in ten days, between November 13 and 22, 1909, while returning to South Africa from England after a failed lobbying mission.

* When Gandhi’s wife was stricken with pneumonia, British doctors told her husband that a shot of penicillin would heal her; nevertheless, Gandhi refused to have alien medicine injected into her body, and she died.

Mahatma Gandhi

There are estimated to be 120 living relatives of Mohandas “Mahatma” Gandhi. They are the descendants of the four sons – Harilal, Manilal, Ramdas and Devdas, Rajmohan’s father – that Gandhi had with his wife Kasturba, whom he married when he was 13.

Putlibai Gandhi

1. Birth & Childhood. In a small, white-washed house in Porbandar, on the coast of Kathiawad in western India, Mohandas Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869. His parents were Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai.

Raliatbehn Gandhi

Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad in British India. His father, Motilal Nehru (1861–1931), a self-made wealthy barrister who belonged to the Kashmiri Pandit community, served twice as President of the Indian National Congress, in 1919 and 1928.
