It’s grown up. Indigenous leaders have been demanding to change date since 2000. Year on year, increasing numbers of non-Indigenous Australians would also like it changed out of respect for Indigenous culture. Keeping Australia Day on January 26 only shows Australia’s collective ignorance.

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove and raising of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip following days of exploration of Port Jackson in New South Wales.

The first fleet of British convicts arrived in Sydney on Jan. 26, 1788, but Aboriginal groups mourn what they call “Invasion Day.” Australia’s national day is controversial because it is held on a date marking British colonization.

According to a Business Insider article, those living in the ACT gets the best deal with 12 days off a year. This is thanks to Canberra Day and Family & Community Day. NSW, the Northern Territory and Western Australia have 10 days. South Australia gets 10 days, but has New Year’s Eve and Christmas Eve as part days off.

Our National Public Holidays are New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. All other public holidays such as Queen’s Birthday and Labour Day are individually declared by the state and territory governments.

Australia. In the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the last Wednesday of November, similar to the pre–World War II American observance on the last Thursday of the month. The holiday was brought to the island by visiting American whaling ships.

ANZAC Day is on April 25 and it is celebrated Australia-wide. However, holiday arrangements vary in states and territories. In the Northern Territory, the Monday following ANZAC Day is a non-working day only if April 25 falls on a Sunday.

From 1 January 2014 the public holiday for ANZAC Day and Waitangi Day are “mondayised” if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday and the employee would not normally have worked on that Saturday or Sunday.

NEW SOUTH WALES: NO Residents in NSW will not be given an extra public holiday on the Monday after Anzac Day. According to the Public Holidays Act 2010, an additional public holiday will be given if the following events fall on a weekend: Australia Day, New Year’s Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s best known horse racing event held on the first Tuesday of November every year. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria. This event is popularly dubbed as “the race that stops the nation”.

Today – 26 April 2021 – is not a holiday in Victoria. Laws pertaining to public holidays are regulated by the Public Holidays Act 1993, established by the Parliament of Victoria.

In 2021, Australia’s national day falls on a Tuesday. To make the most of your annual leave, you can take four days off and get nine days off work in return.
