Wheat is one of Washington’s most valuable farm products, ranked among apples, milk, cattle and potatoes. Roughly 2.3 million acres in the state are put into wheat production each year. The industry employs thousands of Washingtonians and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the state’s economy.

The hills were formed over tens of thousands of years from wind blown dust and silt, called “loess”, from dry regions to the south west. Prevailing winds from the south west blew in the silt and dust to where it settled out into hills of loess that look like giant sand dunes.

The crops being grown in the region are primarily cereal grains; spring and winter wheat and barley along with peas, lentils, garbanzos, bluegrass and some oil seed crops like mustard and canola. The Palouse is the largest lentil growing region in the U.S., exporting lentils to the entire world.

The origin of the name “Palouse” is unclear. was converted by French-Canadian fur traders to the more familiar French word pelouse, meaning “land with short and thick grass” or “lawn.” Over time, the spelling changed to Palouse.

The area known as The Palouse spans several counties, and the central hub is Whitman County, where towns like Pullman, Colfax, Palouse and Uniontown are located.

Also Washington State is typically known as a party school. WSU is the “party school” and anyone who goes to WSU wasn’t smart enough to get into UW. Some stereotypes are that it’s a drinking school and everyone drinks all the time.

The residents of Pullman are very friendly! It’s a small and safe town with a family friendly vibe, but very little to offer off of WSU campus. The weather is nice most of the time and public transportation is reliable during the school year. It’s a University Town.

Pullman has an annual average of 16.9 inches (430 mm) of precipitation. The normal monthly mean temperature ranges from 30.1 °F (−1.1 °C) in December to 65.7 °F (18.7 °C) in August.

WSU has been a dry campus since 1997, but that has not changed its reputation of being a party school.

The undergraduate core curriculum, including the writing program, is nationally recognized. WSU confers nearly 5,900 bachelor’s, master’s, professional, and doctoral degrees statewide in a typical year. WSU employs over 1,400 instructional faculty members.

Not being biased here, as I am basing this on research, UW is better than WSU for their academic overall. If you are looking for a school that will drive you academically, UW beat WSU I’m sure. You can still be successful at WSU, doing the same thing. And there are majors at WSU not available at UW, and vice versa.
