Southern Hemisphere climates tend to be slightly milder than those at similar latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, except in the Antarctic which is colder than the Arctic. This is because the Southern Hemisphere has significantly more ocean and much less land; water heats up and cools down more slowly than land.

At least part of four of the seven continents are located in the Eastern Hemisphere: Africa, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Additionally, at least part of all five of Earth’s oceans are located in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Antarctica and Oceania are located in the Southern Hemisphere; Antarctica being the only continent entirely situated in the Southern Hemisphere. Europe is the second smallest continent after Oceania; this continent is located in the Northern Hemisphere and partly in the Eastern Hemisphere.

The Northern Hemisphere refers to the half of the planet that is north of the equator, while the Southern Hemisphere is all of the planet south of the equator. The North Pole, of course, is in the Northern Hemisphere, while the South Pole is at the most southerly part of the Southern Hemisphere.

The United Kingdom is actually located within almost every hemisphere, the northern, eastern, and western hemispheres.

The Canadian territory of Nunavut lies closest to the North Pole. Greenland, the world’s largest island and an independent country within the Kingdom of Denmark, is also close to the pole. The North Pole is much warmer than the South Pole.

The North Pole is beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone of any country. This makes the surface and the water column International Waters. This should allow anyone to travel to the pole by sea or air. The routes to the North Pole will require innocent passage through the territory of some sovereign nation.

The North Pole itself is near the geographic center of the Arctic Ocean, so you can’t drive to it overland.

But a general budget including all gear and logistics for a solo unsupported expedition is around 100 000 for the North Pole and 150 000 for the South Pole. A two member expedition will come up to around 60 000 USD per person for the North Pole and 100 000 USD per person for the South Pole.

Unlike Antarctica, there’s no land at the North Pole. Instead it’s all ice that’s floating on top of the Arctic Ocean. Over the past four decades, scientists have seen a steep decline in both the amount and thickness of Arctic sea ice during the summer and winter months.

North Pole

No-one lives in Antarctica indefinitely in the way that they do in the rest of the world. It has no commercial industries, no towns or cities, no permanent residents. The only “settlements” with longer term residents (who stay for some months or a year, maybe two) are scientific bases.

The reason that there are few / no high resolution photos of the north and south pole is that it turns out they’re fairly boring, and remote, and desolate, so it’s difficult to get pictures of (and the boring nature of the area means there’s not much drive to do so).
