The seven points of the star represent the six states and the Northern Territory of the Commonwealth of Australia. The Southern Cross is a constellation, or group, of five white stars. This constellation can only be seen in the night sky from the Southern Hemisphere, where Australia is located.

The stars of the Southern Cross represent our geographical position in the Southern Hemisphere, the Commonwealth Star symbolises our federation of States and Territories, and the Crosses stand for the principles on which our nation is based – namely, Parliamentary Democracy, Rule of the Law and Freedom of Speech.

Symbolism. The flag has three elements on a blue background: the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the Southern Cross. Below the Union Jack is a white Commonwealth, or Federation, star. It has seven points representing the unity of the six states and the territories of the Commonwealth of Australia.

The colors on the Australian flag represent the following: Blue – vigilance, truth and loyalty, perseverance & justice. White – peace and honesty. Red – hardiness, bravery, strength & valour. The basic style shown in the picture of the Australian flag is described as Canton.

Word for Fight, fighting or having an altercation – physical or verbal. Example: he was having a blue with his wife.

The Australian Red Ensign is an official flag of Australia and is proclaimed under the Flags Act 1953. The Australian Red Ensign is generally only flown at sea by Australian registered merchant ships or on land by organisations and individuals for ceremonial purposes such as Merchant Navy Day.

There are currently no laws that prohibit the wearing of the Australian flag for style or patriotic purposes. Under the 1953 Flags Act, the Australian National Flag may be flown on every day of the year, provided it is “treated with [the] respect and dignity it deserves as the nation’s most important national symbol.”

Flags should not be left flying overnight because no one will be available to raise or lower it on the weekend or holiday, unless it is properly illuminated.

The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flag staffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
