Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen because she was the oldest child of the previous monarch (King George VI), and she had no brothers. That made her the heir to the throne after her father. They don’t always have a queen. It’s a matter of who ascends the throne at the time.

The Compromise of 1790 was a compromise between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson with James Madison where Hamilton won the decision for the national government to take over and pay the state debts, and Jefferson and Madison obtained the national capital (District of Columbia) for the South.

Prince Philip does not have the title of ‘King’ simply because the law of succession in Britain is based on gender and not bloodline. The parliamentary law means that when someone marries a King or Queen, they become known as a ‘consort’.

Why, then, did Prince Philip not become King Philip (or king consort) after his wife’s coronation? According to Reader’s Digest, although parliamentary law doesn’t consider gender in determining the line of succession, it does factor it into the designation of titles.

The Queen is more important because she is the monarch and the queen regnant. He will be king and his wife will be queen consort (not queen regnant). So he will be more important than his wife. The word consort simply indicates that the person is married to the monarch, that’s all.

The last King of Britain (George VI) had a wife (Elizabeth) who was called Queen Elizabeth. He had no sons, so he was followed by his elder daughter. She is also called Elizabeth and became Queen Elizabeth II. She is married to The Duke of Edinburgh; but when she became Queen he did not become King.

Who will be the next King or Queen? Prince Charles is presently heir (next in line) to the British throne. He will not become king until his mother, Queen Elizabeth, abdicates (gives up the throne), retires or dies.
