The Iliad and the Odyssey in particular were widely regarded as supreme literary works, superior to all others. The study and memorization of these poems formed the primary basis of an ancient Greek education.

The Greeks had easy access to the sea. They became excellent sailors. Trade became important because Greece had few natural resources. Homer kept Greek culture alive under the Dorians by documenting Greek history, in epic poems, such as the lliad and the Odyssey, in which he spoke of the Trojan War.

Homer’s epics reveal about Greek culture reveals much about the values of the ancient Greeks. The heroes display honor, courage, and eloquence.

The stories of the Iliad and Odyssey had a profound impact on Greek society, including its literature, art, ethics, and even mythology. Just as important, the epic poems helped to foster a sense of a common Greek heritage and identity. Homer was a critical influence in the development of Classical Greek culture.

Homer’s most important contribution to Greek culture was to provide a common set of values that enshrined the Greeks’ own ideas about themselves. His poems provided a fixed model of heroism, nobility and the good life to which all Greeks, especially aristocrats, subscribed.

The Odyssey was intended for oral performance. The poem was likely transmitted through generations of oral poets well before it was written down. It’s been suggested that oral poets performed epics such as the Odyssey in song form.

In this epic poem, there are three major themes: hospitality, loyalty, and vengeance.

The Odyssey is Homer’s epic of Odysseus’ 10-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. While Odysseus battles mystical creatures and faces the wrath of the gods, his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus stave off suitors vying for Penelope’s hand and Ithaca’s throne long enough for Odysseus to return.

The book is also about the hardest lessons some men ever learn: self-control, trust and surrender. For example, Odysseus has to disguise himself as a beggar and endure humiliation once he returns to his homeland in order to size up the situation there and plot his revenge on Penelope’s rapacious suitors.

Having come to Ithaca, he drove away some of the cattle, and when Odysseus defended them, Telegonus 3 wounded him with the spear he had in his hands, which was barbed with the spine of a stingray, and Odysseus died of the wound.

In Greek mythology, Astyanax (/əˈstaɪ. ənæks/; Ancient Greek: Ἀστυάναξ Astyánax, “protector of the city”) was the son of Hector, the crown prince of Troy, and his wife, Princess Andromache of Cilician Thebe. Another version is given in Iliou persis, in which Odysseus kills Astyanax.

When Odysseus left Ithaca for the Trojan war he was married to Penelope. After that Odysseus traveled to Calypso’s island. Not only did he cheat with Calypso in addition to Circe, but he stayed on her island for seven years until Zeus ordered her to release him.

The gods are very much involved in Odysseus’ life—for example, Athena is his advocate and patron goddess. The god Helios threatens that he will stop the sun from shining if his anger is not appeased at this violation, so Zeus sends down thunderbolts that destroy all but Odysseus, just as Circe had warned.

While Zeus is often less than fond of the wily king of Ithaca, he doesn’t hate him nearly as much as Poseidon does (although he also doesn’t like him as much Athena, Odysseus’ most avid fan on Mt. Olympus). In a nutshell, Zeus does two main things to Odysseus after the cunning warrior leaves Troy.

Poseidon

Odysseus Has a Run-In With the Cyclops Monster When Odysseus and his men were on the journey home, they encountered a terrible storm which, incidentally, was started by Poseidon. Poseidon was justifiably not happy to learn that his son had suffered in this way, which made him hate Odysseus even more.

Odysseus murders everyone He reveals himself to two of his most loyal slaves, as well as to his son, Telemachus, who is by now all grown up. But he doesn’t reveal himself to Penelope. True to form, murder only begets murder, and the relatives of the people he killed demand retribution; some of them even in get killed!

Odysseus is not a hero because, he is foolish, lacks faithfulness and is consumed by his Hubris and selfishness. Although he may be considered a war hero, Odysseus is not a hero in other respects. This is so because he is self-centered which is clear because he doesn’t value other people’s lives.

As they sail, Odysseus and his men are afraid of being eaten by Charybdis as she sucks in the water. Odysseus stayed closer to Scylla as he had been warned to avoid Charybdis so he wouldn’t lose his entire ship and crew.
