Ne or neon gas is used for advertising signs, as are other noble gases. The gas itself has no color until an electric charge is applied that alters the structure of the Ne molecules. Neon gas only produces a reddish orange color light, so other inert gases are used to make other colors.

Noble gases, known for being chemically unreactive, were tried and found to produce vivid colors. Neon, in particular, gives off a bright glow. The other noble gases, argon, helium, xenon, and krypton, are also used to create bright, colorful signs and displays.

The electrodes of each noble gas release a specific and characteristic wavelength of photons, which determines the colour the gas will shine in – neon for example glows red/orange. This is because argon is the gas that requires the least amount of electrical input to react and thus uses the least energy of all.

Helium

Helium. In colder areas, manufacturers can add helium to the mercury and argon mixture to make the light heat faster. Alone, helium creates a pinkish-red glow. Of the gases on this list, pure helium is one of the most difficult to procure.

The argon produces a blue glow. Fluorescent tubes, such as those used in overhead light fixtures, use a combination of electroluminescence and phosphorescence to make them work. A white coating called a phosphor covers the inside of the glass tube.

Inert Gases They are called inert because they do not typically bond with other atoms, and maintain their molecular structures. Forced reactions cause argon and other inert gases to glow.

Argon is a colourless, odourless gas that is totally inert to other substances. Argon is often used when an inert atmosphere is needed. Argon is used in fluorescent tubes and low-energy light bulbs. A low-energy light bulb often contains argon gas and mercury.
