Etymology. When early explorers of the Arctic first witnessed Inuit nose rubbing as a greeting behavior, they dubbed it Eskimo kissing. This was used as an intimate greeting by the Inuit who, when they meet outside, often have little except their nose and eyes exposed.

Some people consider Eskimo offensive, because it is popularly perceived to mean “eaters of raw meat” in Algonquian languages common to people along the Atlantic coast.

Edy’s Pie is an American brand of chocolate-covered vanilla ice cream bar wrapped in foil. It was the first such dessert sold in the United States. It is marketed by Dreyer’s, a division of Froneri. The dessert was rebranded from Eskimo Pie in 2021, because Eskimo is considered a derogatory term.
