In the summer of 1886, with his seven sons and two daughters by his side, William set out to fulfil a lifelong ambition. Together they began building his Distillery by hand, stone by stone. After a single year of work it was ready and William named it Glenfiddich, Gaelic for Valley of the Deer.

Old-fashioned Style. Glenfiddich definitely is the closest to the “old-fashioned” style of whisky-making.

He came up with the bright idea of bottling it as a single malt and begin promoting it as ‘better’ or ‘more genuine’ than blended whisky. Fifty years on and Glenfiddich remains the biggest selling single malt in the world, and many consumers, at least in the west, still believe that single malt is somehow better, or ‘more real’ than blended whisky.

Two of the biggest factors in what makes single malt whisky so expensive are the Angel’s Share and rarity, which are obviously intertwined. The Angel’s Share is the whisky lost to natural evaporation throughout the aging process. With rum being aged in The Caribbean, this can be a huge portion of the barrel over a period of just 5-15 years.
