Gatsby’s love for Daisy is doomed because he is primarily in love with his dream of being with Daisy. In reality, Daisy is a flawed person who has moved on and isn’t willing to give up her privileged and comfortable lifestyle to be with Gatsby.

Bootlegging was illegal selling of alcohol. Gatsby was a bootlegger and that’s how he made his money. Alcohol was illegal in both the book and history, and bootleggers could make a lot of money. Gatsby’s character could represent any bootlegger that made a pretty penny selling alcohol illegally.

Yes, he killed many. There is an irony in Gatsby’s story, since his bravado, willingness to risk his life and to take many others is rewarded.

To make matters worse, one even senses that Daisy, in fact, tried to kill Myrtle. Gatsby has a hard time admitting that the object of his love has, in fact, not merely hit and killed another person, but has fled the scene as well. Myrtle’s death by Gatsby’s great car is certainly no accident.

Upon learning that the child was a girl, Daisy began to cry. She may have felt that her daughter would have a similar fate; that she would grow up, marry a brute like Tom who cheats on her, and be pressured to simply accept this role.

Nick couldn’t get people to come to Gatsby’s funeral because nearly all the people who Gatsby knew or who knew him were people who simply had used him to get something from him. The people who came to his parties simply wanted a good time, free food, and free drink.

Why does Nick return west after Gatsby’s death? He misses his family, he wants to change jobs, and he is disgusted with the east. She can never live up to the idea of who Gatsby thinks she is.

Once upon a time, his native Midwest was the “warm center of the world” but no longer. Now it feels like “the ragged edge of the universe.” So Nick decides to head out East to learn the bond business. “Everybody [he knows is] in the bond business, so [he supposes] it could support one more single man.”

Owl Eyes attends Gatsby’s funeral in order to show his respect for Gatsby. Unlike most other people in Gatsby’s life, including Daisy, his business associates, his supposed friends, and his party guests, Owl Eyes actually sees Gatsby as a real, complex person.

Because he realizes Gatsby is projecting a facade, Owl Eyes registers surprise that the books on Gatsby’s library shelves are real. He had thought that Gatsby would use cardboard imitations of book covers. He admires Gatsby for going to such great lengths to project an image.

Nick meets Owl Eyes at one of Gatsby’s grand parties. While the other guests trade wild rumors about their host, Owl Eyes cleverly examines details of Gatsby’s home, such as his books, which reveal the depth of Gatsby’s desire to appear impressive and authentic to others.

Owl Eyes is surprised by Gatsby’s library because the books are real, a fact which he clearly did not anticipate, as we see from his verbal reaction: “Absolutely real — have pages and everything. Owl Eyes is so impressed that he likens Gatsby to David Belasco, a prominent theatre director of the 1920s.

Nick and Jordan’s relationship is unique in the novel—they’re not having an affair, unlike Tom/Myrtle and Daisy/Gatsby, and they’re not married, unlike Myrtle/George and Daisy/Tom.

Owl Eyes​excited tells them about Gatsby’s books, saying that they are “Absolutely real—have pages and everything. ‘ ● This is a very important scene, because Owl Eyes was expecting the books to be fake and was shocked and impressed to see that they were real.
