Orchestral instruments do not come any louder than the French horn. So, if you have always wanted an instrument that will make you stand out easily, the French horn is probably more your speed. Instead, the French horn is designed to fill out the sound so that the music being produced feels fuller and more complete.

A mellophone has the exact same sound as the french horn but the piping is twisted differently so it looks less like a giant cinnamon roll and more like a thick trumpet. 99% of bands will use the mello rather than the french horn. It is easier to march with and is held very similarly like a trumpet.

Flesh tends to soften tones, to make them warmer. So when the french horn player put their hand in the bell, they’re helping the instrument to sound less brash and brassy. This also results in a slight change in pitch and volune which they learn to control with experience.

Middle school (or older) trumpet players might switch to French horn since the fundamentals of playing are similar. However, the trumpet is built in the key of Bb, and the French horn is in F (most commonly, but there are also Bb horns).

Some people refer to the French horn as one of the hardest instruments to play because of its difficulty level. Although the French horn can certainly hit an array of notes, it is also very easy for a musician to crack notes or play them flat, making it even more impressive when a person is able to master it fully.
