Typically, the purpose of an engineering drawing is to clearly and accurately capture all geometric features of a product or component so that a manufacturer or engineer can produce the required item.

Engineers don’t necessarily have to be good at drawing but they do need to understand technical diagrams if they want to do their job well. In the fields of civil and mechanical engineering, for example, building roads, buildings, dams, mechanical devices and thermal devices all begin with a design.

Drawing plays a big role in our cognitive development. It can help us learn to write and think creatively, develop hand-eye co-ordination, hone analytic skills, and conceptualise ideas. But drawing is rarely used as a tool for learning in schools.

A component or part drawing is termed as a production drawing, if it facilities its manufacture. It is an authorized document to produce the component in the shop floor. It furnishes all dimensions, limits and special finishing. processes such as heat treatment, grinding, etc., in addition. to the material used.

(d) Machine Drawing — Machine drawing may be defined as the representation of a machine component or machine by lines according to certain set rules. A machine drawing generally gives all the external and internal details of the machine component from which it can be manufactured.

To do this:

1. Run a drawing process for your single parts.
2. In the Process properties dialog, use the Drawing number field to set your drawing number as needed, this will become the part number.
3. Click OK to exit the Process properties dialog.
4. Run a drawing process for your assemblies.

Drawing numbers should be given in all memoranda whenever drawings are transmitted. The drawing numbers are a positive means of identification, and they minimize potential difficulties if drawings become detached from the transmittal memoranda.

Drawings are always organized from most general to most specific or specialized. Since plans are most helpful to see the overall design of the project, they come first. Elevations and sections are a bit more specific and come next followed by details and schedules, which are the most specific type of drawings.

Types of numbers

• Natural Numbers (N), (also called positive integers, counting numbers, or natural numbers); They are the numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, …}
• Whole Numbers (W).
• Integers (Z).
• Rational numbers (Q).
• Real numbers (R), (also called measuring numbers or measurement numbers).
