Bronze is the most popular metal for cast metal sculptures; a cast bronze sculpture is often called simply a “bronze”. Their strength and ductility (lack of brittleness) is an advantage when figures in action are to be created, especially when compared to various ceramic or stone materials (such as marble sculpture).

A bronze sculpture, often simply called ‘a bronze’, is a three-dimensional piece of art made by pouring molten bronze into a mould, before leaving it to solidify. Bronze sculpture is made via a process known as casting: pouring molten metal into a mould and leaving it to solidify.

Making a Sand Cast Bronze Sculpture

Keep your sculpture clean by dusting it with a soft cloth, soft shoe brush, toothbrush or the nozzle brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner. If de-greasing or heavier cleaning is required, test a small area first, cleaning it with a mild soap and distilled water. Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry thoroughly.

Make a paste from either baking soda mixed with lemon juice or equal parts of flour and salt mixed with plain, white vinegar. Gently rub the paste onto the bronze and leave it for about 20 minutes. Rinse with distilled water and repeat for any areas that remain coated.

Apply a small amount of toothpaste with a clean cloth to your brass. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with cold water. Mix together 1/2 cup of vinegar, a teaspoon of salt, and a sprinkling of flour until it forms a paste. Spread the mixture on the brass and allow it to sit for a few minutes.

Bronze, brass and copper cleaner

1. Step 1: Mix 2/3 cup vinegar and 2/3 cup flour in a glass bowl.
2. Step 2: Add 1/2 cup salt and stir.
3. Step 3: Spread on tarnished metal. Wait 1 to 2 hours.
4. Step 4: Rinse, dry and polish with a soft cloth and a dab of olive oil.

Bronze disease is an irreversible and nearly inexorable corrosion process that occurs when chlorides come into contact with bronze or other copper-bearing alloys. It can occur as both a dark green coating, or as a much lighter whitish fuzzy or furry green coating.

Copper, brass, and bronze do not rust for the same reason as aluminium. All three have a negligible amount of iron in them. Therefore no iron oxide, or rust, can form.

30 to 50 years

Gold itself does not tarnish, but when it is plated, it does tarnish over time. The reason for the tarnishing is because the molecules of the base metal transfer to the gold and thus causing the layer to break down. Gold plated brass does not only fade, but it can also get starched or chipped.

Because copper and bronze are not magnetic with even the strongest magnets, you can narrow down your options. Keep in mind that while brass is magnetic, it is very slight. If you take a very heavy-duty magnet and hold it close to a brass object, chances are the object will attract the magnet.

The effect is called the Lenz Effect. The moving magnet causes small magnetic fields, called eddy currents, to form in the metal (brass, aluminum foil/tube …). These eddy currents have their own magnetic field (all electrical currents do).
