An outlier is a person who is detached from the main body of a system. An outlier lives a rather special life compared to the majority of people.

A data set is a collection of numbers or values that relate to a particular subject. For example, the test scores of each student in a particular class is a data set. The number of fish eaten by each dolphin at an aquarium is a data set.

Statistics are used to describe groups of numbers. The methods and techniques used to collect, analyze and present a set of numbers are also called statistics…you may have heard people call this “number crunching.” In research, statistics may be used to determine if a new drug or treatment is useful.

Given Gladwell’s ambitious task, and the energy with which he applies himself to it, his central thesis is rather pedestrian: success is never the result of talent alone. Outliers “reach their lofty status through a combination of ability, opportunity, and utterly arbitrary advantage”.

I enjoyed reading it. It is really similar to Freakonomics in the way it came at each “problem” from a very unique point of view. My only disagreement was that he seems to frequently make the argument that the successful “outliers” were only products of their environment rather than of their own hard work.

The gist of the book is that it’s not exceptional individual talent which explains success, but rather the exceptionally unusual opportunities which successful individuals stumble upon.

Gladwell gives us his general thesis, the argument of his book in broad strokes: he will point out that there is something “profoundly wrong with the way we make sense of success.” We often attribute success to a rare and triumphant collection of individual qualities—talent, motivation, genius—when in fact, success …

The main idea of the “Outliers” is that you need to work harder than all your peers to become successful. Test have been taken by scientist, such as Ericsson and his coleagues, to show that 10,000 hours is the turning point of being merley good to being an expert expert.

So that’s what the Beatles and Bill Gates had in common: They clocked up their 10,000 hours of intense, purposeful practice, became the best in their fields… and the rest is history. You could say that luck was on their side. They were given golden opportunities.
