The name derives from the original purpose of the compartment, to store driving gloves. They were sometimes in a box on the floorboard near the driver, hence the word “glovebox”.

Most often, a jammed glove box can be opened by gently tapping the latch mechanism while carefully pulling on the glove box door itself. The emphasis here is on gentle, careful attempts performed with patience, not brute force. Go back and forth between tapping the latch and pulling on the door until it opens.

Standard plastic glove boxes cost less than $50, while stainless steel and aluminum ones are priced at around $50 to $60. Basically, the price will go up if the glove box has special built-in features.
