In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tom would lie about Daisy’s being a Catholic to give himself an excuse for not leaving her and marrying Myrtle. In effect, Tom is hiding behind the Catholic prohibition against divorce in order to avoid telling Myrtle that he has no intention of marrying her.
