Rochester saved his servants and tried to save his wife, but she flung herself from the roof as the fire raged around her. In the fire, Rochester lost a hand and went blind.

Mr. Rochester makes Jane jealous because he wants to test her love to see if she is as much in love with him as he is with her. To that end, he pretends that he’s going to be married to the beautiful Blanche Ingram.

Summary: Chapter 23 Rochester confides that he has finally decided to marry Blanche Ingram and tells Jane that he knows of an available governess position in Ireland that she could take.

Eyre that Jane had died of fever at Lowood. Soon afterward, Mrs. Reed dies, and Jane helps her cousins after the funeral before returning to Thornfield.

Adèle is Mr. Rochester’s ward and the daughter of Céline Varens. Céline was Rochester’s mistress during his time in France, but Rochester cut her off after discovering Céline cheating with another man.

When Mr. Rochester dresses as a gypsy, he also takes on a significantly lower social ranking: he transforms from a wealthy, respectable, and educated man into a poor beggar. Jane, although still far more respectable than a gypsy, can relate to this character in many ways.

It is too late for her to make now the effort to change her habitual frame of mind; living, she had ever hated me—dying, she must hate me still. Jane finally accepts that Mrs. Reed will never change and will show hatred for Jane even in death despite Jane’s gracious forgiveness.

Reed gives Jane a letter from her uncle, John Eyre. Written three years earlier, the letter reveals that he wishes to adopt Jane and leave her his fortune. Mrs. Reed didn’t send it to Jane because she hated her too much and wanted to get revenge.

Bessie Lee – who eventually becomes Mrs. Leaven tells Jane about Mr. Eyre in Chapter 10. Though, at this point, she is not yet Mrs.

Summary: Chapter 10 After spending two more years at Lowood as a teacher, Jane decides she is ready for a change, partly because Miss Temple gets married and leaves the school. She advertises in search of a post as a governess and accepts a position at a manor called Thornfield.

Before he knew it, they were married. After the honeymoon, Rochester learned that Bertha’s mother was shut in an asylum and her younger brother was mentally challenged. Ultimately, Bertha’s excesses led her into premature insanity. Rochester contemplates suicide, but then decides to return to Europe with Bertha.

Jane is able to forgive Mrs. Reed because of her own maturity, grace, and self-awareness. As an adult, Jane can clearly see the moral failings of her relatives and understands why they treated her the way they did.

Jane is given the chance to gain an education and find a way to contribute to the world. She later becomes a teacher at the school, gathering the experience she will need when she starts work as a governess. Most importantly, Jane undergoes intense moral and spiritual evolution at Lowood.

Mr. Rochester is about twenty years older than Jane. He is likely between the ages of thirty-five and forty, while Jane is about nineteen.

In the book Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë goes through such corrupt and detrimental life alterations that one would at least believe Jane deserves a happy ending. Even though Jane’s relationship with Mr. Rochester may be unconventional and confrontational, she does eventually end up marrying him out of love.

Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre (1847), one of the best-loved novels in the English language, may have been inspired by a real person. The real Jane Eyre was a member of a Moravian settlement, a Protestant Episcopal movement, and lived virtually as a nun for a period before marrying a surgeon.

Bertha Mason had a familial, progressive, primarily psychiatric disease with violent movements that culminated in premature death. Other diagnoses to consider include Huntington disease-like illnesses.

Another source of complexity is Bertha’s ethnicity. She is a Creole, the daughter of a white European settler in the West Indies.

Jane is as beautiful in The Eyre Hall Trilogy as she was in Jane Eyre, if some readers didn’t capture her beauty that, it’s their problem, not mine or Charlotte Bronte’s!

Rochester is not classically handsome. As Jane describes him, he is of middling height, has a harsh face, and is past his first youth. She falls in love with him for reasons other than his looks.

No matter what happens, stick to your principles: Being an orphan, Jane never lost the path to righteousness or did anything immoral. In the story, Jane is head over heels in love with Mr. Rochester, but leaves him at the aisle when she discovers that he has a wife.

Without giving too much away, Jane is awoken several nights to the sounds of a figure wandering the halls, horrifying screams, an attack on a Thornfield guest, and much more. Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre traps its Gothic romance in a haunted house and the result is both thrilling and nerve-racking.
