A spoon half-immersed in a glass of water appears bent at the surface of the water. We know that this is due to refraction of light, which bends the rays of light at the surface, so that the retinal image of the spoon is illusorily bent.

Place a straw in a glass of water, and behold: It looks broken. Above the water, the light reflects from the straw through the air and glass to your eyes. But below, when the light also travels through water, the refraction causes the image of the straw to be in a slightly different location.

Try heating it up gently first, say, with a hair dryer on high. I’ve never tried bending plastic, to be honest, but the hair dryer method and immersing in hot water works quite well for resin.

The Hot Water/Cold Water trick should work on most types of pliable plastic. In fact, if the plastic was soft enough to get bent out of shape in the first place, it’s soft enough to be bent back into place.

Plastic bending: how it works All thermoplastic synthetic materials can be bent when heated. Polycarbonate and PETG can also be bent (temper shaped) when cold. This technique involves forcing a plastic sheet into the desired shape in its cold state.

Helpful tips when bending PERSPEX®️ with a heat gun or hairdryer: To bend your acrylic sheet with a hair dryer, we recommend that you keep the outflow opening at least 5 centimetres away from the surface of the sheet. Move the hair dryer slowly and gently along the fold line and make sure that it’s evenly heated.

Bubbles and Scorching. If you don’t apply heat evenly to the bend line of a sheet of plexiglass or acrylic you can create bubbles or scorch marks that cannot be removed. Do not keep your heat gun or torch too close to the plastic.

Joining Acrylic Plastic There are two techniques for solvent cementing, capillary and dip or soak methods.

Acrylic has a higher impact strength than glass and does not shatter when exposed to high strains. Shattering into small, blunt chunks is desirable for applications in which tempered glass is used, e.g. in automobiles. Acrylic is more tolerant to these forces and rather flexes then breaks.

Acrylic as a material is cheaper to manufacture and transport than glass. But a complete glass aquarium is still cheaper than an acrylic one. Because of this, more glass aquariums are manufactured, which reduces the total cost.

Acrylic is lighter and clearer then glass and a little less dense than glass when you tap a coin on it acrylic you will hear a dull, hollow sound, glass has a denser higher sound. Glass is very difficult to scratch,Acrylic is highly scratch able.

At the end of the day, acrylic is a type of plastic. Glass aquariums can scratch as well; however, it has a resistance to scratching many, many times greater than acrylic aquariums. Over the long haul the acrylic aquariums will look old and beat up at a much greater rate than glass aquariums.

Hold up a glass to the light. If the glass acts as a prism and you see a rainbow you are holding the crystal. If not, it is just plain glass. A commonly called “crystal”, is a variety of glass in which lead replaces the calcium content of a typical potash glass.

Plexiglass sheeting’s clarity allows for more than 90% of light to pass through, making it more transparent than glass. However, no matter the thickness of plexiglass, it always remains clear.
