Birkway himself appears at the Winterbottom house with Phoebe’s journal in hand. He apologizes to her for reading her journal aloud and proceeds to explain that Mrs. Cadaver is his sister and that her husband died in a car accident that also blinded Mrs.

Mr. Birkway is Sal’s crazy awesome English teacher. He loves everything about teaching, and he loves everything about his students. He’s one of those great teachers who is enthusiastic about everything and thinks all his students are geniuses.

Blackberries symbolize Sal’s mother. In Chapter 20 Sal describes watching her mother kiss a tree after eating the blackberries that grew wild on their Kentucky farm. Since then Sal has adopted the practice of kissing trees and claims that every tree she kisses tastes slightly of blackberries.

Ben has a crush on Sal and tries to kiss her, which is confusing to her. Ben is generally much more in-touch with his emotions, and in dealing with other people, whereas Sal is the opposite.

Sal does not think she is brave. She is scared of “lots and lots of things.” Sometimes she pretends to be brave when that is what people expect of her, even if she is scared to death. Though Sal doesn’t want to hear anything about her, she eventually discovers that Mrs. Cadaver’s husband died in an awful car accident in which a drunk driver hit his car. She was the nurse on duty the night of the crash and was there when he passed away. Even more importantly, Sal also discovers that Mrs.

Since her mother left, Sal has become more sensitive to others, rather than just concerned about herself. She reflects back on the events that preceded her mother’s leaving. This makes her aware of some similar unhappiness and dissatisfaction in Mrs. Winterbottom.

Phoebe has an extraordinary imagination, and this subplot with Phoebe relates to her mother’s disappearance and her reaction to it and also connects to Sal’s mother’s going away.

The final tragedy that Gram and Gramps must cope with comes when Grams suffers a stroke and dies. When he’s forced to say goodbye to his gooseberry, Gramps is ever the trooper. He’s unspeakably sad, of course, but he returns to Bybanks and keeps on trucking.
