Many of the fatalities occurring today are from the most elite skydivers who push the limits under small parachutes that are exciting to fly, but increase the risk quotient exponentially. In other words, many of today’s fatalities occur via pilot error while flying perfectly functioning parachutes.

The fatality rate for skydiving is 0.006 per 1,000 jumps, according to the U.S. Parachute Association.

When people do sadly die during a skydive, it’s most likely to happen during advanced maneuvers; typically, ‘normal’ skydiving results in even fewer issues. Out of those, there were 21 fatal skydiving accidents. This equates to 0.006 fatalities per 1,000 jumps, which is a very small risk.

Skydiving does involve risk. You can be seriously injured or killed skydiving, but like all things, the level of risk can be managed within a culture and focus on safety. You can breathe while skydiving. In fact, we actively encourage breathing while skydiving. (Breathing regularly is super-good for you.) Even in freefall – at speeds up to 160mph – you can easily get plenty of oxygen into those airbags.

Parachutes are designed to reduce your terminal velocity by about 90 percent so you hit the ground at a relatively low speed of maybe 5–6 meters per second (roughly 20 km/h or 12 mph)—ideally, so you can land on your feet and walk away unharmed.

We’re not dissing denim here, but usually, jeans and skydiving just don’t mix. If you have a pair of well-loved worn-in jeans, by all means, wear them skydiving. The skydiving harness will be a bit tight and jeans may be uncomfortable. The bottoms you choose for skydiving need to be constructed with movement in mind.

When you consider that each jump takes quite a bit of energy out of you, you probably don’t want to be doing too many more than 4 jumps per day. Skydiving does not give you that roller coaster stomach drop sensation. The reason why skydiving does not give you a stomach drop sensation is because you are flying in an airplane that is moving forwards at 40-80 mph. This means that your body is already moving at that speed when you exit the airplane.

You aren’t legally allowed to jump through clouds, even if that seems like fun. Second, clear skies make for a better view! You can see for miles when you’re 2.5 miles above the Earth, and a cloudy day would take away from that experience. Low and consistent winds are the second coveted condition.

Skydiving in clouds is similar, except collisions with other skydivers, parachutes and airplanes/helicopters are a real threat lurking in the clouds. Simply put, if we can’t see where we are going it is not safe to skydive.

If you are a solo student skydiver (generally in our Advanced Freefall Program or an unlicensed skydiver), the USPA Basic Safety Requirements state that wind limits are 14 miles per hour. This is the most strict limit as student skydivers are still learning the flight and landing characteristics of the parachute.

When the rain gets harder, it gets dangerous. A very wet skydiving parachute can still fly, but it doesn’t fly efficiently. Its stall speed is lower, it’s not as crisp in its flight dynamics and it doesn’t produce a nice, soft landing flare at the end of the adventure.

Wind certainly affects the flight pattern. The wind pushes on the parachute, causing it to be moved in the direction of the wind with whatever speed it is pushing. The size of the parachute affects the speed of falling because a larger parachute allows it to displace more air, causing it to fall more slowly.
