The Dewey Decimal system is a classification system used by libraries to arrange books via subject. Each book is issued a shelfmark number, usually found on the spine of the book, and arranged in numerical order.

Dewey helped establish the American Library Association (ALA) in 1876; he also co-founded and edited Library Journal. Dewey became the librarian of Columbia College (now Columbia University) in New York City in 1883 and founded the world’s first library school there in 1887.

Dewey Decimal Classification

Before Dewey, the Columbia College Library was shelved by “fixed location”, a finding system in which books are assigned to specific shelves or bookcases, in contrast to the relative order of modern classifications. In the library room used up to 1883, there were ten alcoves that were designated for broad subjects.

Libraries in the United States generally use either the Library of Congress Classification System (LC) or the Dewey Decimal Classification System to organize their books. Most academic libraries use LC, and most public libraries and K-12 school libraries use Dewey.

Fiction is shelved alphabetically by the author’s full last name. If there are multiple books by the same last name, then the books should be shelved then in alphabetical order of the author’s first name.

Generally, you can use a catalog system on a computer to search by title, author, subject, and more. Once you locate your title with the search, you’ll receive the call number. From there, it’s just a matter of figuring out where in the library the fiction or what-have-you is located and where it starts.

Reference books cannot be checked out because they are intended to be available and quickly accessible by all students who may need to use these resources. Gale Virtual Reference Library and Sage Knowledge are two popular online collections of special subject encyclopedia articles.

For this reason, they can’t be borrowed and may only be used in the library. Examples include encyclopaedias, dictionaries, almanacs, handbooks, and indexes.

Reference book helps you in enriching your knowledge and deeper your concepts and understanding. Reference books also give lots of problems on a single topic which enables you to practice lots of problems for preparation of board exams.

Letters, diaries, minutes, photographs, artifacts, interviews, and sound or video recordings are examples of primary sources created as a time or event is occurring.

There are three main types of reference assistance: Assistance or instruction with using the library, including locating materials, using the catalog, using computers to access information, and using basic reference sources.

By definition, a reference is a person that will validate your claims be it a resume or as a past customer. A referral however, is a person that recommends one to another. A reference waits for a call to confirm claims while a referral actively reaches out to people on your behalf.
