Land breezes usually occur at night because during the day the sun will heat land surfaces, but only to a depth of a few inches. At night, water will retain more of its heat than land surfaces because water has a high heat capacity.

Sea breezes occur during hot, summer days because of the unequal heating rates of land and water. During the day, the land surface heats up faster than the water surface. Therefore, the air above the land is warmer than the air above the ocean. Recall that the land surface cools quicker than the water surface at night.

The opposite of a sea breeze is a land breeze. While sea breezes occur during the day, land breezes occur at night.
