Boxed mac and cheese often means survival for tots and poor college students, but new research shows there may be harmful chemicals in the powdered cheese. Lab tests revealed that toxic industrial chemicals, called phthalates, are found in 10 varieties of macaroni and cheese, including eight out of nine Kraft products.

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the US contains the artificial food dyes Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. These unnecessary – yet potentially harmful – dyes are not in Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in other countries, including the UK, because they were removed due to consumer outcry.

Chick-fil-A’s mac and cheese is one of the unhealthiest items on its menu. A medium serving of Chick-fil-A mac and cheese has 450 calories and 29 grams of fat, 16 of which are saturated fat. It’s by far the least healthy side dish at Chick-fil-A, outnumbering the waffle fries in both calories and fat.

It’s cheesy, creamy, a little bit greasy. It tasted reminiscent of Stouffer’s frozen mac and cheese, which is something I lived on as a teenager. I wouldn’t swap waffle fries for it, but if someone added it to a catering order, I’d grab a spoonful.

One of America’s most beloved chain restaurants, Chick-fil-A, added Mac & Cheese to their menu nationwide as of August 12. Considering their menu consists mostly of meat-based meals, the new side item brought in vegetarians who tend to stay away from traditionally meat-focused restaurants.

The new menu item is also available with KFC’s spicy, smoky Nashville Hot sauce. Crafted as a main dish, Mac & Cheese Bowls combine KFC’s rich and creamy mac and cheese, topped with crispy popcorn chicken, and sprinkled with a three-cheese blend.
