Black bear cubs make motor-like pleasure sounds as they nurse. Similar to a cat’s purring, bears make this pleasure sound when they are especially comfortable, nursing, or eating a special treat. The cub is making the cooing sounds and the mother grunts, which is a common sound mothers make to cubs.

Adult females give birth in dens to baby bears called cubs. Cubs are born in January and they weigh about 8 ounces at birth. They are born blind, covered with fine hair and they nurse on their mother’s milk. Female bears may give birth to 1 to 6 cubs at a time, but 3 is the average litter size in New Jersey.

As a result of this project, and after collecting and analyzing a staggering 34,000 hair samples, the latest estimates hover around 300 grizzly bears and 600 black bears, but refinements are constantly improving the accuracy of the estimate.

A bear’s body posture can communicate their mood. Walking or running away, sitting and lying down convey that the bear is subordinate to another bear or person. The bear is saying he does not want to fight for dominance, a fishing spot or a female.

Animals that produce purr-like sounds include mongoose, bears, badgers, foxes, hyaenas, rabbits, squirrels, guinea pigs, tapirs, ring-tailed lemurs and gorillas while eating. Animals purr for a variety of reasons, including to express happiness or fear, and as a defense mechanism.

Black bears not only communicate with grunts, tongue-clicks, and blowing. Examples of the black bear’s resonant voice, include: a cub screaming in terror. an adult male’s moan of fear.

One of the sounds people might call a growl is the moan of fear. Bears that escape up trees at campsites sometimes moan plaintively in a deep voice. Another sound some might call a growl is the huffing that scared bears do as danger passes and they nervously decide to descend from a tree or stop running away.

Bears use the same vocalizations with humans as with other bears: jaw-popping, woofing, low grumbles and moans. These sounds are rarely a sign of aggression, more often a signal that the bear is concerned, nervous or merely upset at what’s going on.

Most bear species make vocalizations that sound like a huff, chomp, woof, growl, and/or bark which mean the bear is agitated, angry or annoyed. A bawl, bellow, squeal or whimper indicates pain. A mumble, hum, or purr indicates contentment. In many cases vocalizations are done along with some type of body posturing.

Adult polar bears vocalize most when they’re agitated or threatened. Sounds include hissing, growling, champing of teeth, and chuffing. Cubs vocalize more often and for diverse reasons. Sounds include hissing, squalling, whimpering, lip smacking, and throaty rumblings.

Predators

• Adult polar bears have no natural predators except other polar bears.
• Cubs less than one year old sometimes are prey to wolves and other carnivores.
• Newborn cubs may be cannibalized by malnourished mothers or adult male polar bears.

Interestingly, Polar Bears have a wide variety of sounds from growling to humming, chuffing to crying. They may not be loud but they do vocalize when they are distressed, hungry, angry and content.

List of animal sounds

While taking pictures of zebras grazing in a safari park in Kenya, in Africa, Lincoln Harris, a tourist from Pennsylvania, caught one particular zebra who started to “laugh” and make awkward faces as he snapped photos. The other zebras look pretty unimpressed and straightfaced, however.

When we see them at the zoo, they appear to be very quiet animals. However, zebras do communicate with sound. They make many of the same noises as horses do, as well as their own distinct noise.

However, zebras do indeed produce noises that are fundamental to their social interactions. Some of them are very close to what horses sound like, yet they also have a very distinct high-pitched noise that makes them unique. Generally speaking, zebras either bark, bray, or snort.

ZEBRAS NEIGH, BRAY, AND … Mountain zebras whinny like a horse, Grevy’s zebras bray like a donkey, and plains zebras bark like dogs. Alarmed stallions may squeal or snort, and happy zebras may push air between their lips when they’re eating.
