Following Disney’s acquisition of Hulu, the company switched High Fidelity over to the other platform in April 2019, likely because the show’s more adult themes were a better fit for Hulu than the typically PG-rated Disney Plus.

“High Fidelity,” beginning Friday on Hulu, is a terrifically cool show that gets awfully far on vibes alone, thanks in large part to a mesmerizing lead performance from Zoë Kravitz. She’s so good, in fact, that it’s almost impossible to believe she can’t find someone to love her exactly as-is.

Thirty-something Rob Gordon, a former club DJ, owns a not-so-lucrative used record store in Chicago. He not so much employs Barry and Dick, but rather keeps them around as they showed up at the store one day and never left. All three are vinyl and music snobs, but in different ways.

Many fans may not know that High Fidelity Season 2 has been cancelled. The American web comedy TV series based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Nick Hornby was cancelled on August 5 this year after one season.

Hulu’s High Fidelity features mirrored scenes from the original film, including exact dialogue, as the audience follows Rob’s introspective journey. The TV show and film both start off in the middle of a breakup, with Rob listing his/her top five most painful endings to previous relationships.

The final scene shows Rob making a new mixtape for her, a moment that leaves the audience with the warm fuzzies expected from a romantic comedy. When Hulu announced it would be rebooting High Fidelity with a biracial female lead, the show seemed likely to follow the original plot.

In its unforced, whimsical, quirky, obsessive way, “High Fidelity” is a comedy about real people in real lives. The movie looks like it was easy to make–but it must not have been because movies this wry and likable hardly ever get made. Usually a clunky plot gets in the way, or the filmmakers are afraid to let their characters seem too smart.

Rob is the movie’s narrator, guiding us through his world, talking directly to the camera, soliloquizing on his plight–which is that he seems unable to connect permanently with a girl, maybe because his attention is elsewhere. But on what?

John Cusack stars as Rob, who owns a used-record store in Chicago and has just broken up with Laura, his latest girlfriend. He breaks up a lot. Still hurting, he makes a list of the top five girls he has broken up with and cackles that Laura didn’t make it.

R ob Brooks, the star of Hulu’s reimagining of High Fidelity, is a difficult protagonist to have sympathy for. She is, first of all, played by Zoë Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz and an actor of effortless cool.
