But the Witch exists to show Mulan and the audience that these two women are also limited by same inevitable constraint: their gender. Because they are women, neither one is respected by their peers or their enemies. The Witch represents the endpoint of Mulan’s journey.

While Xian Lang is written as a villain and does villainous things like wear black and kill soldiers without mercy (or blood), it turns out she’s the real hero of the story, without whom Mulan could not have saved all of China.

Xianniang is a shape-shifting falcon (a nod to Hayabusa, the falcon who serves Shan Yu in the 1998 film). She also has the ability to transform into a thousand birds. Mulan, meanwhile, is protected by the phoenix, the bird of her ancestors, which guides her on her path to becoming a warrior.

Although Mushu doesn’t appear in the live-action Mulan, the guardian of Mulan’s ancestors is still a major part of the film. Instead of a dragon, however, it’s a phoenix. There is an argument to suggest that the phoenix is supposed to replace Mushu as Mulan’s sidekick in the live-action film.

Although Mulan possesses no magical or superhuman powers, she has military training courtesy of Shang.

OK. the real reason is probably because of Geisha’s makeup and Disney didn’t know the difference between Chinese and Japanese culture and didn’t bother to do proper research on Mulan. So Geisha makeup is rooted in Tang Dynasty women’s makeup.

In the original film, the Emperor asks Mulan to become a member of his council, but she declines the offer so she can return home to her family.

Disney’s live-action “Mulan” is a film that is as painful to watch as it is to review. The short explanation: the film abuses human rights, regurgitates current nationalistic myths, grossly appropriates one of China’s most beloved characters, and fails both Eastern and Western viewers alike.
