Japan’s fear of being colonized and the government’s expansionist policies led to its own Imperialism in Asia and Pacific in order to join the Great Powers, which only constituted of white nations. The Japanese government saw the need to be a colonial power to be modern, therefore, Western.

Why Attack Pearl Harbor? As war was inevitable, Japan’s only chance was the element of surprise and to destroy America’s navy as quickly as possible. Japan wanted to move into the Dutch East Indies and Malaya to conquer territories that could provide important natural resources such as oil and rubber.

Faced with severe shortages of oil and other natural resources and driven by the ambition to displace the United States as the dominant Pacific power, Japan decided to attack the United States and British forces in Asia and seize the resources of Southeast Asia.

Tension between Japan and the United States increased dramatically when Japan seized French Indo-China (now Vietnam) in July 1941. Japanese troops poured into Indo-China, and the Japanese military began preparations to attack the Philippines and British and Dutch colonial possessions in South-East Asia.

Even if Germany didn’t declare war on the USA in 1941, the US would have been forced to declare war later on anyway. Dozens of merchant ships were sunk off the East Coast of the United States between 1941 and 1945. Sooner or later, these sinking would have forced FDR’s hand to declare war on Germany.

American military leaders hoped to attack Germany quickly by launching an attack across the English Channel. Stalin also supported this plan. Soviet forces were suffering terrible losses from the Nazi attack and wanted the British and Americans to fight the Germans on the west.

The common soldier was annoyed that the American infantry declined to “fight fairly” and relied heavily on artillery and airpower to soften resistance. The Germans had great respect for American artillery, but other than that, the landser of the Wehrmacht were often decidedly unimpressed by their US Army enemies.

JAPANESE troops practised cannibalism on enemy soldiers and civilians in the last war, sometimes cutting flesh from living captives, according to documents discovered by a Japanese academic in Australia. He has also found some evidence of cannibalism in the Philippines.

Like most strategic bombing during World War II, the aim of the air offensive against Japan was to destroy the enemy’s war industries, kill or disable civilian employees of these industries, and undermine civilian morale.

Experts estimate Chernobyl could be habitable again anywhere from 20 to several hundreds of years. Some people never left the area, however, and have lived in the shadow of the disaster since 1986. Extreme tourists are also steadily making their way into the area….

The areas surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, including the nearby city of Pripyat, have since deteriorated into abandoned ghost towns. But some residents have returned to their villages following the explosion and evacuation, despite dangerous levels of radiation, and some remain there today….

Despite looking normal, Chernobyl’s animals and plants are mutants. There may be no three-headed cows roaming around, but scientists have noted significant genetic changes in organisms affected by the disaster.

The Elephant’s Foot is the nickname given to a large mass of corium and other materials formed underneath the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near Pripyat, Ukraine, during the Chernobyl disaster of April 1986.

The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates between 4,000 and 27,000 people died as a result of the disaster, where as Greenpeach places the figure much higher at between 93,000 and 200,000. Many people living hundreds of miles from the explosion site fell ill with illnesses in the aftermath of the disaster….

The tours to Chernobyl are safe. In what concerns the radiation, the levels of radition in major parts of restricted zone are at levels that would not influence human health even for one month stay. The route goes through this safe places and approaches the former nuclear plant to distance of few hundred meters.

The report projected tens of thousands dead among the liquidators. In Europe, it alleges that 10,000 deformities have been observed in newborns because of Chernobyl’s radioactive discharge, with 5000 deaths among newborn children.

Who were the three men? The heroic men were named as mechanical engineer Alexei Ananenko, senior engineer Valeri Bespalov and shift supervisor Boris Baranov. Ananeko said to Soviet media in 1986, “Everyone at the Chernobyl NPS (nuclear power station) was watching this operation.”…

Most of the direct victims are buried at the Mitino cemetery in Moscow. Each body is sealed in a concrete coffin, because of its high radiation. Although the power plant is named after the small town of Chernobyl, a new town was built much closer to the power plant; the town of Pripyat.

The fire inside the reactor continued to burn until May 10 pumping radiation into the air. Authorities eventually realised they had to stop it to prevent the radiation contamination spread. Using helicopters, they dumped more than 5,000 metric tons of sand, clay and boron onto the burning, exposed reactor no. 4….

For decades after the event it was widely reported that the three men swam through radioactive water in near darkness, miraculously located the valves even after their flashlight had died, escaped but were already showing signs of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and sadly succumbed to radiation poisoning a short while …

Estimates suggest that had this been allowed to happen, half of Europe would have been wiped out, many millions would have perished, and the entire area would have been uninhabitable for over 500,000 years….

If nothing were done, the intensely contaminated area would certainly expand due to ground water seepage and due to the wind and birds spreading the radioactivity. There was no death toll to the workers on the enclosure to the only cost is monetary.

When Ignatenko died, his body — along with those of 27 other firefighters who died of radiation sickness in the following weeks — was still radioactive. They had to be buried beneath hefty amounts of zinc and concrete to protect the public….
