He pulls his jack knife out carefully with the intention of pulling the blanket back and stabbing whoever is above him. Bugs explains that everyone at the Home knew about Bud’s knife and how well he could use it, so he jumped on him to make sure he could stop the knife until he could identify himself.

Bud is just turning to go, unwilling to be beaten and still be hungry afterward, when a big hand comes down on his neck. Fearing that the man is going to strap him anyway, Bud tries to escape. However, the new fist belongs to a strange man, who calls him Clarence.

Chapter Six: Pretend Family Suddenly a man pretending to be Bud’s father calls him ‘Clarence,’ and scolds him for being late while nudging him toward the front of the line. Bud eats breakfast with his pretend family, and they even share their brown sugar to top Bud’s oatmeal.

It is moving pretty fast now and Bud throws his bag up to Bugs who is on the train, but his flyer blows out of his suitcase and lands right in his hand. Bud puts the flyer in his pocket and then runs as fast as he can, but he can’t catch up. So Bugs tosses Bud’s suitcase out.

He wants Bud to ride the rails with him. How did Bud and Bugs become “brothers”? They spit on their hands and slapped them together.

Deza then tells Bud that he is different from other boys who hop trains and travel aimlessly throughout the country because he keeps family inside his heart. Essentially, the poor white family is racist and they refuse to accept help from black people.

In Chapter 8, Bud and Bugs spend the night at a Hooverville in hopes of catching the morning train to Chicago. When Bud lies down, he does a little trick that helps him fall asleep. Bud takes his blanket out of his suitcase and pulls it all the way over his head.

How did Bud fall asleep? By smelling his blanket three times. IT reminded him of his mother at night reading a story to him. That the train was going to sneak padt them while they were sleeping.

As they work, Bud tells her he plans to take the train to Chicago. Deza tells him that her dad plans to take it too to look for work in the West again.

What did Bugs and Bud have to do in order to get dinner? Bugs and Bud had to wash dishes in order to get dinner.

Bud mentions that the Hooverville was a massive settlement of raggedy little huts and cardboard houses. After speaking to a man playing the harmonica, Bud learns that there are many other Hoovervilles throughout the country that are home to people with little or no money.

Why did Bud regret looking out of the window? He saw his mother’s ghost. He was afraid of the dark.

Lewis keeps his suitcase as collateral–he says if Bud doesn’t come back in five minutes, that he will bring his suitcase to him inside; we know that Bud has been lying, and if the men meet, he will certainly get caught in his lie. John Brown was a white abolitionist; Mr.

Why doesn’t Bud cry when he tells his “father” that he is his son? Bud doesn’t cry when he meets his father because “his eyes don’t cry no more” and he doesn’t want the men in the band to think he is a baby.

Jimmy tells him he’s wrong—he reveals to Bud that Angela Janet was Herman’s daughter’s name, meaning that Herman could be Bud’s grandfather. Bud is overjoyed to receive the news that Herman isn’t his father after all.

Steady Eddie is the saxophone player in Herman’s band. He takes Bud under his wing and is the one to give Bud his first instrument, a flute, as well as his old saxophone case for Bud to put his things in.
