From the mountains of the American West to the highlands of Peru and Chile, you’ll find shepherds tending flocks of thousands of sheep. Sheep are still popular animals today, both for their meat and their wool.

Shepherds, for instance, herd and tend to flocks of sheep. Goatherds tend to goats, and swineherds to pigs and hogs. Herders who tend to cattle were once called cowherds. Most cowherds are now known as cowboys.

Flock Welfare A shepherd’s primary responsibility is the safety and welfare of the flock. Some flocks may include as many as 1,000 sheep. The shepherd will graze the animals, herding them to areas of good forage, and keeping a watchful eye out for poisonous plants.

Sheep cannot live without the shepherd. They are entirely dependent on the shepherd for everything. They require constant care and watching over. So leaving them unattended can put them at risk and greatly endanger their lives.

The sheep symbolism as a spirit animal typically means: – There is a part of you with a tendency to conform to family values or social norms. – You are capable of respecting your own limits and accepting yourself; positive vulnerability.

Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them… I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:11-15 ESV).

Sheep were among the first animals ever domesticated by humans. Their docile nature has long made them emblems of peaceful co-existence; gentle affection and the ability to accept guidance from an authority figure. The Bible often uses “Sheep” as a corollary of spiritual living and community.

Sheep is a meek animal. They are usually very quiet and gentle, holding themselves aloof from the world. In a herd, all the sheep tend to listen to their leaders and show esteem to them. Because of the obedient character, sheep are among the most popular animals beloved by mankind.

Among animal totems, the sheep is one of the more highly regarded spirit animals. Some myths and stories use sheep as a symbol for certain things. The Bible used the sheep metaphorically many times, and even the teen best-selling novel, Twilight used the sheep as a symbol for simplicity and vulnerability.

A sheep as a dream symbol is usually a good sign, indicating joy, prosperity, and happiness. Sheep in dreams can sometimes indicate children. Dreams about sheep could also indicate being pressured by someone or not having the freedom to think for yourself.

“Drenching” refers to the process of delivering oral deworming medication. Drenching sheep is a fairly straightforward process, but you must be careful and thorough to avoid accidentally hurting the sheep.

Ewes should only be wormed once a year at lambing time; this will reduce the number of eggs on the pasture so that there are less for lambs to pick up. Lambs have little resistance to worms in their first grazing season but this develops with time.
