Lewis Hamilton revived his Formula One title defence by winning the British Grand Prix for the eighth time on Sunday despite a 10-second penalty after he collided with Max Verstappen, knocking the championship leader out of the race.

The stewards awarded Hamilton a ten second time penalty, as well as two penalty points. “The Stewards reviewed video and telemetry evidence,” said the statement from the stewards. “Cars 33 [Verstappen] and 44 [Hamilton] entered Turn 9 with Car 33 in the lead and Car 44 slightly behind and on the inside.

The race was red-flagged and the incident placed under a stewards’ investigation, with Hamilton eventually found at fault. Sorry! Hamilton was penalised two points on his on his super license following the crash that had the Red Bull driver spinning off track and hitting the barrier.

Despite the fact Max Verstappen has been the driver with the most penalty points amassed over a season, twice in 2015 and 2018, he will go into 2021 with not a single point on his licence.

Long story short, nearly all race drivers don’t get paid at all. They have to bring money to the teams who run them, by finding sponsorship or other sources of money. Essentially, the driver is usually the customer for the team, not the employee.
