On 14 May 2019, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced that the new program would be named Artemis, who is both the twin sister of Apollo and the goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology. Despite the immediate new goals, Mars missions by the 2030s were still intended as of May 2019.

In some contexts, it is used to refer to interstellar space. The International Telecommunication Union defines “deep space” to start at a distance of 2 million km (approximately 0.01 AU) from the Earth’s surface. NASA’s Deep Space Network has variously used criteria of 16,000 to 32,000 km from Earth.

The United States is the only country to have successfully conducted crewed missions to the Moon, with the last departing the lunar surface in December 1972.

Only 12 humans, all men, have ever walked on the Moon; all human Moon missions were part of the U.S. Apollo program between 1969 and 1972. No woman has ever walked on the Moon.

The Artemis Project was a private spaceflight venture to establish a permanent, self-supporting base on the Moon by 2002. It was named after Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, in some myths the moon, and twin sister of Apollo (a reference to the Apollo project).

As of the 2009 Astronaut Class 61% of the astronauts selected by NASA have come from military service. NASA selects candidates from a diverse pool of applicants with a wide variety of backgrounds. From the thousands of applications received, only a few are chosen for the intensive Astronaut Candidate training program.

Bluford, Jr., selected by NASA in 1978, was the first Black American to reach space. Bluford launched aboard the eighth space shuttle mission on August 30, 1983, then went on to fly three other space shuttle missions in 1985, 1991, and 1992.
