Actually Malyavan was the elder brother of Ravana’s actual maternal grandfather Sumali and once used to be the former king of Lanka, later Ravana reconquered it. In addition to the royal protocol relations that he had with Ravana, he was the maternal grandfather of Ravana, therefore, he had a dual relationship.

So, they would have been together for about 22 years in all. Sita lived for another 12 years. Rama lived for 12 years thereafter, that is, until his sons came of age. According to The Ramayana by Valmiki, Rama and Sita spent 27 years together.

In these revisions, the death of Sita leads Rama to drown himself. Through death, he joins her in afterlife. Rama dying by drowning himself is found in the Myanmar version of Rama’s life story called Thiri Rama.

Yes Vedavati was Sita in her next birth. Vedavati incarnated as Sita to bring about the destruction of Ravana in Treta Yuga. Once Ravana touched a chaste princess named Vedavati against her will who was wandering alone in a forest.

We know that Ravana kidnapped Sita, strange and amazing is that according to Jain version of the ‘Ramayana’, Ravana was the father of Sita and he was against casteism. Both Rama and Ravana were devout of Jains. Ravana was a Vidyadhara king having magical powers.

Why he couldn’t touch Sita? Ravana couldn’t attempt to rape her because he had got a curse in the past when he raped a celestial damsel. Despite several persuasions and proposals, Sita didn’t agree, hence he couldn’t touch her fearing his own death due to the curse he had.

Ravana is described as having 10 heads and 20 arms. His ten heads, as per mythology, represent his 10 qualities which are Kama (lust), Krodha (anger), Moha (delusion), Lobha (greed), Mada (pride), Maatsyasya (envy), Manas (mind), Buddhi (intellect), Chitta (will) and Ahamkara ( the ego).

Lord Ravana performed an intense penance (or Tapasya) to Lord Shiva, lasting several years. During his penance, Lord Ravana chopped off his head 10 times as a sacrifice to appease him. Each time he sliced his head off a new head arose, thus enabling him to continue his penance.

Ravan performed a yagya for Ram. But the biggest bhakt of Shiva in the entire region was Ravan, and since he was half-brahman, he was also the best qualified to perform the yagya. Displaying honour, Ravan actually showed up, performed the yagya and gave Ram his blessing.
