Alexander the Great

Alexander IV was the son of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian) and Alexander’s wife Roxana (a Sogdian). Because Roxana was pregnant when Alexander the Great died on 11 June 323 BC and the sex of the baby was unknown, there was dissension in the Macedonian army regarding the order of succession.

According to Athenaeus, Callixena was employed by Olympias out of fear that Alexander was “womanish” (γύννις), and his mother used to beg him to sleep with the courtesan, apparently to no success. Some modern historians, such as James Davidson, see this as evidence of Alexander’s homosexuality.

First of all, his mother was from an Illyrian (Albanian) tribe. The original name of Macedonia was “Emathia,” which in Albanian means “the great land,” hence the appellation Alexander the Great.

The Albanians are most probably the descendants of the ancient Illyrians who were colonized after the seventh century BCE by the Greeks and subsequently by the Romans. During the Middle Ages, modern-day Albania formed successively parts of the Byzantine, Bulgarian, Serbian and Angevin-Norman empires.

The Illyrians (Ancient Greek: Ἰλλυριοί, Illyrioi; Latin: Illyrii) were a group of Indo-European speaking tribes, who inhabited the western Balkan Peninsula in ancient times. They constituted one of the three main Paleo-Balkan populations, along with the Thracians and Greeks.

After the Turks and Kurds, Albanians are the third most represented ethnic group of parliamentarians in the Turkish parliament, though belonging to different political parties. The Albanian diaspora in the country lobbied the Turkish government for recognition of Kosovo’s independence by Turkey.

Turkey remains for Albania an important military ally alongside the USA. Through its military personnel Turkey continues to train Albanian armed forces and also to provide assistance in logistics and modernisation efforts of the Albanian military.

However approximately 500,000 people are reported to profess an Albanian identity. Of those with full or partial Albanian ancestry and others who have adopted Turkish language, culture and identity their number is estimated at 1,300,000–5,000,000 many whom do not speak Albanian.

Population. The Albanians are considered to be descendants of Illyrian and Thracian tribes who settled the region in ancient times. The country is ethnically homogeneous with 96 percent of the population being Albanian.

The pronunciation of “β” changed from /b/ in ancient Greek to /v/ in Byzantine Greek. This is reflected in the Turkish term, Arnavut or Arnaut, by ways of metathesis (-van- to -nav-). The Ottoman Turks borrowed their name for Albanians after hearing it from the Byzantine Greeks.

When Albanian national hero George Kastrioti Skanderbeg fought against the Ottoman Empire during the 15th century, he carried a banner with the two-headed eagle to unite his people.

Due to the high unemployment of the Albanians in Kosovo, Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia, many Albanians came as guest workers in Switzerland in the 1970s. The Albanians quickly found work and integrated themselves into social structures in Switzerland.

It is a safe country Albania is one of the least dangerous places in Europe. According to the UK Foreign Office, public safety is generally good, and there are very few reports of crime aimed at foreigners or tourists, although pickpocketing does happen.

The Flag of Albania (Albanian: Flamuri i Republikës së Shqipërisë) is a red flag with a silhouetted black double-headed eagle in the center. The red stands for bravery, strength, valour and bloodshed, while the double-headed eagle represents the sovereign state of Albania.

Amazed by the valiant hunter’s deeds, the people of the land elected him king and called him Shqipëtar, which is to say Son of the Eagle (shqipe or shqiponjë is Albanian for eagle) and his kingdom became known as “Shqipëria” or Land of the Eagles.

They adopted a coat of arms in which the Austrian eagle expressed commitment to the common man by holding a hammer, for workers, and a sickle, for farmers, in its claws. In 1945, Parliament voted to add broken shackles dangling from the eagle’s legs, symbolize release from Nazi domination.

With the end of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 and of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918, Austria lost its imperial banners and was reduced to its present borders. The new republic adopted the simple red-white-red flag, which reappeared in 1945 after seven years of Austrian amalgamation with Nazi Germany.
