In the Tanakh, Obed (Hebrew: עוֹבֵד, ‘Ōḇêḏ, “worshipper”) was a son of Boaz and Ruth, the father of Jesse, and the grandfather of David. He is named as one of Jesus’ ancestors in the genealogies recorded in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke.

Sadly, as the transporting party progressed, the oxen stumbled and Uzzah, one of the three men guiding the oxen touched the ark to steady it. We’re told that God struck him to death.

Boaz was 80 years old and Ruth 40 when they married (Ruth R. 6:2), and although he died the day after the wedding (Mid. Ruth, Zuta 4:13), their union was blessed with a child, Obed, David’s grandfather.
