Although season one saw many heinous acts being carried out by the show’s characters, viewers were first stunned by the death of Robert Baratheon (played by Mark Addy). Robert was killed by a boar during a hunt after his wound got infected and left him without hope of recovery.

First appearing in 1996’s A Game of Thrones, Gendry is a blacksmith apprentice in King’s Landing, and an unacknowledged bastard of King Robert Baratheon….

Their deaths sparked a massive uprising against Aerys led by Robert, Eddard and Jon Arryn. Lyanna and Aerys died during the civil war that followed. Robert claimed the Iron Throne because he started the war and killed Prince Rhaegar personally.

Thus the Seven (or nine) Kingdoms of Game of Thrones were made up as follows:

• The Vale – House Arryn.
• The Iron Islands – House Greyjoy.
• The Riverlands – House Tully.
• The Westerlands – House Lannister.
• The Stormlands – House Baratheon.

Arya was born in 289 AC (“After (Aegon’s) Conquest”) as the third child and youngest daughter of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn Stark of Winterfell, the ruling liege of the North, and is nine years old at the beginning of the book series and 11 in season 1 of the show.

Introduced in 1996’s A Game of Thrones, Robert is the eldest son and heir of Lord Steffon Baratheon. He is a close friend to Ned Stark, both being wards of Lord Jon Arryn. After crushing the Targaryen dynasty and winning the war, during which Lyanna died, Robert took the Iron Throne.

Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the last Prince of Dragonstone, was the eldest son and heir to King Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King. He was the older brother of Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen and the husband of Elia Martell, with whom he had two children, Rhaenys and Aegon.

Robert served King Aerys II Targaryen (known as the Mad King) as the Lord Paramount of the Stormlands. Robert claimed the Iron Throne because he started the war and killed Prince Rhaegar personally. Robert also had the best claim to the throne as a result of being related to the Targaryens through his mother.

Robert Baratheon (season 1) portrayed by Mark Addy. Robert Baratheon of House Baratheon, formerly a fierce warrior, became King of the Seven Kingdoms after leading a rebellion against Aerys II Targaryen.

King Robert marries Cersei Lannister. King Robert also loves to throw events such as tournaments at which he spares no expense. Unfortunately, after seventeen years Robert’s excesses have left the realm deeply in debt for a shocking six million Gold Dragons, half to House Lannister.

Tom McCarthy directed the original pilot, but much of this was later re-shot by Tim Van Patten as the pilot was reworked into the first episode of the complete season. Van Patten also directed the second episode.
