Nizamuddin Auliya

Also known as Hazrat Nizamuddin, and Mahbub-e-Ilahi (Beloved of God), he was a Sunni Muslim scholar and Sufi saint of the Chishti Order. Like most of the Chishti Sufi saints, Nizamuddin Auliya stressed love as a means of realising God. His father died when Nizamuddin was just five years old.

Nizamuddin Dargah is the dargah (mausoleum) of the Sufi saint Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya (1238–1325 CE). Situated in the Nizamuddin West area of Delhi, the dargah is visited by thousands of pilgrims every week. The site is also known for its evening qawwali devotional music sessions.

It was built in 1325 by Khizr Khan, the son of Alauddin Khalji (r. 1296-1316), and is the oldest building in the Nizamuddin area.

He (Amir Khusrau) was one of the chief disciples of Sheikh Nizamuddin Auliya; and a disciple with a firmer faith in his master I have never seen. Of love and affection, too, he had his full share, and he was a man of ecstasy and rapture.

Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti, named after the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, came into existence in the 13th century, and eventually came to house the famous dargah of the saint who passed away in 1325, and his spiritual disciple, poet Amir Khusrau.

Nizamuddin Dargah – Rockstar It is also one of the favourite Bollywood film shooting locations in India. In the film Rockstar, the song ‘Kun Faya Kun’ sung by A.R. Rehman is shot in Nizamuddin Dargah.

His predecessors were Fariduddin Ganjshakar, Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki, and Moinuddin Chishti, who were the masters of the Chishti spiritual chain or silsila in the Indian subcontinent. Nizamuddin Auliya, like his predecessors, stressed love as a means of realising God. For him his love of God implied a love of humanity.
