How did Winston respond when there was too little to eat when he was a boy? He would suffer in silence .

It turns out that the “place where there is no darkness” is actually room 101, where Winston’s secret thoughts are revealed and broken down. There is also continuous artificial light in room 101, so obviously there cannot be possibly any darkness.

Meaning: Heaven is a place where there is complete love. Hell is where love is lacking. That’s why a relationship or place where there is no real love is full of hell.

This phrase refers to Winston’s mind in the sense that winstons mind is constantly being used, usually thinking a negative thought, but ever so often a positive one will show up.

O’Brien nodded without appearance of surprise. While Winston waits in a cell in the Ministry of Love after being caught by the Thought Police, he reflects on the fact that O’Brien knew what the place where there is no darkness is because he knew that Winston would be caught.

Winston seems to dream the landscape so often that he has named the place. Why does Winston not have pajamas? Because the party does not give him enough coupons to buy pajamas. What does Winston do between 7:30 and 7:40 in the morning?

Winston is an Outer Party member, which is basically this story’s version of a middle class. As a records editor at the Ministry of Truth, his job is to literally rewrite history, revising old newspaper articles so they’re in line with the Party’s current vision of the truth.
