The Cowsills, a family band, popular in the 1960’s and early 1970’s were the inspiration behind The Partridge Family, and had hits such as “Hair” and “The Rain, the Park, & Other Things.

Halidon Hall is the Newport, Rhode Island, mansion that is always considered the home of the Cowsills. Here are some pictures from back in the 60’s and some more current. Halidon Hall is 23-room Victorian house complete with a captain’s walk, which was at 21 Harbor View Drive.

In 1969, The Cowsills had their biggest hit, the multi-million selling title song from the musical “Hair.” The Cowsills signed with London records in 1970 and released their “On My Side” album followed by two single releases in 1971: “You (In My Mind) / Crystal Claps” and “Covered Wagon / Blue Road”.

When the group expanded to its full family membership by 1967, the six siblings ranged in age from 8 to 19. Joined by their mother, Barbara Cowsill (née Russell), the group inspired the 1970s television show The Partridge Family.

Despite her losses, she remains a New Orleans resident and still performs regularly with her band at Carrollton Station. She married fellow band member and drummer Russ Broussard in July 2003.

William “Billy” Cowsill, lead singer ofSixties singing family the Cowsills, died on Friday at his home in Calgary at the age of fifty-eight. He had been in poor health, suffering from emphysema, Cushing’s syndrome and osteoporosis. Billy Cowsill is survived by his two sons, Travis and Delaney.

“We had parents who got married too young, had seven children, like immediately, and had no skills and no tools on what to do with them,” Bob says. “So the dad decided to bring in the military because he was in the Navy and that’s all he knew. “With six sons he had no choice.

The song was a major hit for the Cowsills in 1969 and their most successful single.

This was the first record (with the exception of the JODA record) that The Cowsills actually played their own instruments on. Apparantly when recording the song “Hair”, it took a few takes. John said back in 1998, “I, John Cowsill, single handedly tortured my older siblings on the Hair sessions.
