On May 12, 1846, the United States Senate voted 40 to 2 to go to war with Mexico. President James K. Polk had accused Mexican troops of having attacked Americans on U.S. soil, north of the Rio Grande. But Mexico claimed this land as its own territory and accused the American military of having invaded.

Conflict with Mexico began when the United States annexed Texas as a state in 1845. Mexico claimed that the new border between Texas and Mexico was the Nueces River, while the United States contested the border was the Rio Grande. Fighting began when a detachment of U.S. cavalry was attacked near the Rio Grande.

Americans, as well as the incoming President, claimed that the boundary of Texas was the Rio Grande River. The territory between the two rivers was the subject of angry bickering between the two nations. Soon it would serve as the catalyst for an all-out war.

Many Northern Whig and Liberty Party members believed that Polk only sought the territory acquired from Mexico to extend slavery. Most abolitionists opposed the war and slavery on moral grounds. Other Northerners did not want to compete with Southern slaveholders in any territory acquired from Mexico.

Mexico lost control of California for a variety of reasons including:

• Weak Mexican government and economy of Alta California.
• Rancho owners had bought more property and gained much power.
• Mexican government couldn’t afford to pay its soldiers in Alta California.
• The capital of Mexico was far away.

California, like other lands taken from Mexico, came with large populations of Mexican, Spanish speaking people. They have Spanish names because it was a state created by, and that belonged to Mexico.
