Worthing Borough Council

Designed by Sir Robert Rawlinson and built by the Worthing Pier Company, it was officially opened on the 12th April 1862, and was the 13th pier opened in England. It was a great success from the start and was instrumental as a visitors attraction in helping Worthing blossom into a popular, thriving seaside town.

One of Worthing’s earliest and most important hotels was Warne’s Hotel. It was built as a five-house block called York Terrace in the 1820s, reputedly by John Rebecca.

For people who are thinking of moving to Worthing, this town generally has a really low crime rate. The only rough area is Durrington due to rise in social housing, but it is not dangerous.

Mr Poulton-Smith said the name Worthing is a combination of a Saxon name and the Old English word ‘inga’. “Until sea-bathing became fashionable in the late 18th-century, Worthing had been a small fishing village, but by 1820 it had firmly established itself as a rival to Brighton.”

Someone has recommended Pevensey as a place worth visiting. We’re not looking for bright lights and tourist attractions as such, we like strolling around, general sightseeing and nice scenery.

One of the biggest seaside towns on the South Coast, Worthing is a lively destination for shopping, eating, entertainment and family fun by the seaside! It’s perfectly located to explore the award-winning beaches and seafront of the Worthing coast, as well as the stunning landscape of the South Downs.

The gently sloping beach at Worthing is sand and shingle, with most of the sandier parts being covered as the tide moves in. Popular activities on the beach include fishing, windsurfing and swimming, although there is no lifeguard service. There is zoning for water sports. Worthing Pier is found along the beach.

Selsey Beach is a sand and shingle beach close to Pagham Harbour. The beach is part of Selsey Bill which is a headland stretching about three miles out into the ocean with the beach being on both sides.

Bathing water quality is on the up along the south coast but Worthing’s offering still lags behind its neighbours. According to Southern Water statistics, Worthing’s water quality has been rated ‘sufficient’ – the third highest rating after ‘excellent’ and ‘good’ – in a repeat from a test in 2018.

East Beach

East Preston and Angmering beach has groynes and is pebbles with compact sand at mid to low tide. This is a standard beach for this West Sussex coast stretch, although due to difficult access the beach tends to be used by the locals. East Preston and Angmering Beach is dog friendly and allows dogs all year.

The mile long sand and shingle beach at Littlehampton is everything you would expect from a long established seaside resort. It is also patrolled by RNLI Lifeguards during the summer months and a Kidcare wristband scheme operates to make the beach super safe for families.

Lifeguards. Our lifeguards are on duty daily from mid-May to Mid-September, 10am to 5pm. Their primary role is to prevent incidents from occurring, and to educate and advise visitors. They undergo rigorous training and have an amazing amount of knowledge and experience.

Its great weather and sandy beaches have led the Witterings to be called ‘God’s Pocket” by locals for centuries. That’s not to say the weather is perfect of course. It can be wild and windy, so always best to check one of the many websites showing the West Wittering weather and tides.

The beach on the western (seaward) side is mostly of fine sand with shingle at the northern end and East Head has been formed from this sand washed along the coast from east to west by a process known as longshore drift.

Hastings Beach does have expanses of sand, especially at low tide, but for the most part it is made up of sea-smoothed pebbles. With a diverse array of cafes, restaurants and attractions Hastings beach and seafront is fun for the whole family!
