Josh is a college freshman in the movie, meaning he’s either 18 or 19 years old. Sure, it’s not that far off from Cher’s 16, but she is still a minor.

Silverstone has previously made it clear that there will not be a sequel to Clueless, attributing the choice to the film’s writer-director Amy Heckerling. And she told ET that she agrees with her reasoning.

“Clueless” is loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel, “Emma.” Although most of the characters’ names were changed in the film, Cher was inspired by Austen’s titular heroine, and the film’s plot parallels the classic novel’s — but with modern twists.

So yes… she’s just about the same character as Cher, just with about 200 years of time between them. Not unlike Clueless, Taylor-Joy’s Emma struts around in high fashion the entire movie. Both of these heroines make it quite clear that they are not interested in being in relationships early on in the film.

‘Emma’: Matching Up The Plot Points. Clueless takes its plot and characters from Jane Austen’s Emma, much in the same way that Bridget Jones’ Diary updated Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. And the update feels, in my mind, much truer than the other Emma adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow that came out a year later.

Clueless is one of the best films of 1995 not despite, but because it manages—and I quote Cher quoting that Polonius guy in Hamlet—“to thine own self be true.” It remains the smartest Hollywood adaptation of serious British literature because it leans into its subversive portrayal of “dumb girls” and “girly things.” It …
