Political science and sociology are disciplines that seek not only to explain politics, but to provide causal evidence of where our values come from. The role of political philosophy is to evaluate our politics, our political behaviour and institutions, and to prescribe superior ones.

Science is about empirical knowledge; philosophy is also about a priori knowledge (if it exists). Science is about contingent facts; philosophy is also about necessary truths (if they exist). Science is about descriptive facts; philosophy is also about normative truths (if they exist).

Psychology studies the way the human mind works, helping us to understand why people behave the way that they do. Political scientists sometimes use the insights of psychology to analyze a president’s or voter’s behavior or to explain why some people are more prone to supporting certain governments and ideologies.

Political philosophy is not a science; it does not offer testable hypotheses and it cannot be tested against the world. Like political science, political philosophy is a way of explaining the how the political world works (that is, both of them are a different approach to studying politics).

Political science majors should be able to: Understand and use the methods that political scientists use to answer questions about politics. Use critical thinking and evidence to understand and evaluate rival theories and interpretations. Formulate and express in writing a well-organized argument, supported by evidence.

Political science focuses on the theory and practice of government and politics at the local, state, national, and international levels. We are dedicated to developing understandings of institutions, practices, and relations that constitute public life and modes of inquiry that promote citizenship.

The overall field of political science includes several major subfields: American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political economy, and political philosophy. Most political science departments at universities encourage students to specialize or concentrate in one of these subfields.

Modern political science can generally be divided into the three subdisciplines of comparative politics, international relations, and political theory.

Studying political science is not actually hard but it’s really different from other disciplines. Most of the people who don’t know about pol science, presume that it’s somewhat what they see on TV or newspapers.
