Sam, it has always been Sam. My answer is Sam. His bravery comes from his loyalty and love of Frodo which is a powerful force.

So he’s plenty brave. But consider Bilbo, whose greatest acts of courage are to face down Gollum in the goblin tunnels and to approach Smaug by himself in the Lonely Mountain. These are all acts that he does completely by himself, without fully knowing what he’s even up against.

In Chapter 9, he displays both bravery and intelligence in devising a plan for the escape of the dwarves to Esgaroth; Gandalf has departed and their fate is in Bilbo’s hands.

As I have suggested, Bilbo’s moral decisions make him a hero. There are of course some components for heroism that Bilbo possesses: he has a sword that he names Sting, a symbol of power and strength, he acquires armour and is finally brave when he walks into Smaug’s lair. Rebirth is an important theme in the novel.

As opposed to the classic epic hero, Bilbo does not also fight great wars; he tends to be protected by chance and luck, what can be confirmed in the biggest brawl in The Hobbit, The Battle of the Five Armies, where Bilbo doesn’t take a direct part in because he was knocked out.

Gandalf could see past the scared, orderly, and calm part of Bilbo to the selfless, humble, and cleverness part of Bilbo. He knew that once Bilbo embraced the other side of him, then he would become a great hero. These three traits that Bilbo has make him a hero; selflessness, humility, and cleverness.

Bilbo is one clever hobbit. The fact that he is able to adapt to new situations is what keeps him alive. A perfect example of this is his use of the ring when fighting the spiders. Before he found the ring in Gollum’s cave, he never would have been able to use it or know how to use it.

When the dwarves were captured by the elves, it forced Bilbo to step up and save them. During this event, Bilbo was being selfless. He put his friends first by trying to save them. He was being very brave by doing this because he could have gotten caught when he was going throughout the kingdom.

Bilbo names his sword “Sting”, after he uses it to kill the giant spider.

Sting had the magical ability to detect orcs or goblins nearby. When orcs or goblins were present, it glowed blue, as it did when the Fellowship encountered orcs in the mines of Moria. This was a common property of First Age Elf blades, particularly those forged in Gondolin.

Thrain II

Book: During the battle of five armies, Thorin attempted to kill the leader of the orcs, named Bolg, son of Azog. However, Bolg protected himself with lines of orcs surrounding him. Thorin made it through part of these lines, but was mortally wounded because of how large Bolg’s protection was.

What is the underlying reason for Thorin’s descent into madness? The book answer is that dragon-sickness did it, in the mountain, with a pile of gold. But in the book, dragon-sickness got the Master too, who never set foot in the mountain—but it didn’t get the rest of the Erebor Dwarves or Bilbo (or did it?).

Thorin was probably “tall” because of his royal heritage and how central of a character he was. Hobbits = Really Short. Smaller than even most dwarves, which was shown rather nicely when Bilbo stood amongst the others.
