“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.” -Friedrich Nietzsche.

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.

Gazing into an abyss feels like a neutral or innocuous desire to know, until you imagine yourself being looked at in the age of looking. The abyss gazes into you, meaning that it spots you looking for something in it.

But it’s the second part of the quote that becomes more difficult to discern: “If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.” Most people think this means that if you immerse yourself too much in evil — even if you are fighting it — you can become seduced or broken by it.

The Male Gaze theory, in a nutshell, is where women in the media are viewed from the eyes of a heterosexual man, and that these women are represented as passive objects of male desire.

Essentially, the male gaze sees the female body as something for the heterosexual male (or patriarchal society as a whole) to watch, conquer, and possess and use to further their goals.

The “gaze” is a term that describes how viewers engage with visual media. Originating in film theory and criticism in the 1970s, the gaze refers to how we look at visual representations. When film critics talk about the gaze, they are often referring to the “male gaze”.

Many people consider eye contact to be a sign of trustworthiness. On the other hand, not looking someone in the eye is often associated with lying. If you want to build trust with another person, try eye gazing. According to a 2016 study , people are more likely to believe a person who’s looking straight at them.

For clarity, I use the term ‘direct gaze’ when a participant views a stimulus (live, photo, video or computer generated) in which eyes appear to gaze directly at the participant. Mutual gaze or eye contact refers to the situation where two people look directly at each other.

In fact, in Japanese culture, people are taught not to maintain eye contact with others because too much eye contact is often considered disrespectful. For example, Japanese children are taught to look at others’ necks because this way, the others’ eyes still fall into their peripheral vision [28].

In the Western world, too little eye contact is interpreted as being impolite, insincere, or even dishonest. One hospital, analyzing letters of complaints from patients, reported that 90 percent of the complaints had to do with poor doctor eye contact, which was perceived as a “lack of caring.”
