Lysander loves Hermia, and Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius; Demetrius used to love Helena but now loves Hermia. Egeus, Hermia’s father, prefers Demetrius as a suitor, and enlists the aid of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to enforce his wishes upon his daughter.

Hermia

Lysander & Hermia Together So Hermia and Lysander get married in a triple ceremony with Helena and Demetrius and the Duke and his lady, Hippolyta. The play ends with the fairies blessing their marriage beds.

Lysander changes from being so besotted with Hermia that he will risk everything for her, to being in love with Helena and hating Hermia. He is very considerate to Hermia at the beginning, agreeing to sleep a little way away from her in the forest, but under the spell he forgets about her and leaves her in danger.

According to Egeus, Hermia has fallen in love with this young man because Lysander bewitched her. Egeus outlines all the ways Lysander has wooed his daughter. Hermia says she considers Lysander, not her father, a god.

Oberon tells Puck to use the juice of the flower called love-in-idleness on Titania’s eyes to make her fall in love with someone so she gets distracted from the fight. Oberon also tells Puck to use the flower on Demetrius. Demetrius is in love with Hermia, but Hermia is in love with Lysander.

When Puck sees the two lovers sleeping separately, he does not interpret their distance as a sign of modesty. Instead, he assumes that Lysander is the “lack-love” Demetrius and that Hermia is not sleeping close to him because he’s such a lout.
