Delaney, tough-talking Detective Diane Russell on “NYPD Blue” since May ’95, will leave Steven Bochco’s ABC hit after this season to star as a criminal defense attorney in a new Bochco drama to be set in Philadelphia. The new show will launch in fall 2001 on ABC.

Here’s the deal: Turturro asked off ABC’s “NYPD” after he won the lead as Sammy “The Bull” Gravano in NBC’s “Witness to the Mob” mini-series. Being the nice fellows they are, Milch and partner Steven Bochco agreed to write him off the show until he finished “Mob” for the rival network.

NYPD Blue made a significant impact in mainstream media by featuring obscene language. While some shows may still have used sounds to censor certain words, others began to have raw profanity. Another change was that the police series had more nudity.

The character was written out of the show in Season 7; in the series, Martinez left the 15th Precinct after passing the examination for promotion and receiving a new assignment as a uniformed sergeant.

Nicholas Turturro Jr. (born January 29, 1962) is an American actor, known for his roles in New York City based films and on the television series Blue Bloods and NYPD Blue. Nicholas is the younger brother of John Turturro and the cousin of Aida Turturro.
