John Baker is the founder of Celebrate Recovery, a ministry started at Saddleback Church. Over the last twenty-three years, it is estimated that more than 3.5 million people have gone through this Christ-centered recovery program.

Baker died Feb. 23 at the age of 72, having gone from Air Force veteran to businessman to a leader at one of the nation’s largest churches. But Baker’s story isn’t primarily about his accomplishments.

Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a Christ-Centered recovery program that uses the words of Christ in the Bible to help overcome any addiction. The founders designed their program to help those in need by showing them the power of Jesus Christ’s words through a recovery process.

Here are 5 ways you can celebrate Recovery Month.

1. Find a local event near you. SAMHSA has a comprehensive list of Recovery Month events located on their website, where you can search and find one near you.

The Celebrate Recovery 12-Step Study is more of an in-depth study than the Thursday night open share groups. It is essentially the meat and potatoes of the Celebrate Recovery ministry. The purpose of this program is to allow us to become free from life’s hurts, hang-ups, and habits.

The Beatitudes are sayings attributed to Jesus, and in particular eight blessings recounted by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, and four in the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, followed by four woes which mirror the blessings. Each is a proverb-like proclamation, without narrative.

At first glance, the main purpose of the Beatitudes seems to be to offer various consolations to the downtrodden. But while Jesus does this, he also propounds a stern standard of judgment and offers strict guidance for good behavior for those who find themselves in a position of privilege.

This speech is known as the Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon, Jesus taught his followers the Lord’s Prayer and told them several parables. The sermon also contained the Beatitudes and Jesus’ teachings about God’s laws, which he expected his followers to uphold.
