Italy has hosted the Games on four occasions: 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo. 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino.

Average ticket prices for the games will range between $13 and $457 (in 2016 dollars) . The Federal government will designate the Olympics a National Special Security Event (NSSE) in which the U.S. Secret Service heads a single chain of command.

According to the Tokyo Olympic Organising Committee, tickets for the opening ceremony will range from Y15,000 to Y300,000 (about US$220 to US$2680). Average ticket prices for events will cost from Y2500 to Y130,000 (about US$60 to US$1160) and half of tickets will cost less than Y8000 (about US$44).

They do not pay to enter the Olympics. At least that is the answer if you are refering to entry fee, which have to be payed in order to be allowed to compete. Of course, there are payments by other means. The athlete needs equipment.

2014 Sochi Winter Olympics

Beijing generated $3.6 billion and spent more than $40 billion for the Summer Olympics in 2008. As of 2016, Los Angeles is the only host city that realized a profit from the games, mostly because the required infrastructure already existed.

One thing that certainly contributed to Sochi’s $52 billion price tag was the cost of security. With terrorist attacks and high-profile public protests making headlines in the lead up to the event, around 40,000 security personnel were called in for the Games.

As the costs of hosting have skyrocketed, revenues cover only a fraction of expenditures. Beijing’s 2008 Summer Olympics generated $3.6 billion in revenue, compared with over $40 billion in costs, and London’s Summer Games in 2012 generated $5.2 billion compared with $18 billion in costs.

The IOC is entirely privately funded, yet its affiliate NOCs also receive public contributions and government grants. Yet, private funding from broadcasting and licensing rights make up all of the revenue of the IOC and the vast majority of the revenue of the IOC and NOCs combined.

Disadvantages of Hosting Major Sporting Events. To host a major sporting event like the Olympics can cost significant sums, which have to be paid for by the taxpayer. Costs of the Olympics have a tendency to rise over time and be much greater than expected.

For the 2016 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium cost $109 million to build, whereas London Stadium, built for the 2012 Summer Olympics, cost roughly $780 million.

As part of its contribution, the IOC pays for the host broadcast operation, Olympic Broadcast Services (OBS), and provides various forms of Games support to the OCOG including through its “Transfer of Knowledge” programmes.

Most of the Tokyo Summer Olympic events will be held in Tokyo itself. The venues are divided into two zones: Heritage Zone and Tokyo Bay Zone. Heritage Zone venues are in central Tokyo, within the Yamanote Loop Line, while most Tokyo Bay Zone Venues are on Odaiba, an artificial island in Tokyo Bay.
